Pilates — What Is It?

Pilates ("puh-LAH-tees") is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates, who immigrated to the United States in the early part of the 1900s. He developed a series of exercises which can be performed on a mat or on the equipment which he designed.

All of the exercises involve using resistance to tone and strengthen all the muscles of the body. The mat work uses one's own body as resistance; the work on the equipment uses springs in addition to the weight of one's body to build strength with flexibility.

Anybody, at any age or physical shape, can do Pilates!
